100 Illustrators

I'm extremely honored to be chosen by
Steve Heller and Julius Wiedemann as one
of the one hundred most significant illustrators
in their new book 100 Illustrators
published by Taschen.

"Culled from our Illustration Now! series is this selection of today’s most successful and important illustrators from around the globe.
In his introduction, Steven Heller fleshes out the challenging process of narrowing down a field of 600 illustrators to a selection of the 100 most significant.
The final cut, including artists such as Istvan Banyai, Gary Baseman, Seymour Chwast, Paul Davis,
Brad Holland, Mirko Ilić, Anita Kunz, and Christoph Niemann, provides a snapshot of the highly dynamic and diverse world of contemporary illustration."

We are accepting published work from around the world. Eventually, submissions will be curated for a possible exhibition to bring attention to Shakespeare's influence and continued presence in modern day theater.

The book will be published by Princeton Architectural Press.

"The Victor" in Film

This morning I received an email from Zoran Golubovic. The only thing in the email was this video without any accompanying explanation. After I started to watch the video I was quite surprised to see that this short movie was based on my old comic, "The Victor," from 1977.

I really liked the naivete and cuteness of the costumes and the actors, Vukasin Nikovic and Igor Savic. The movie was directed by Momcilo Golubovic.

Thank you, guys, this was a really pleasant surprise. For my non-Serbian speaking friends, below is my comic with the English translation.

Lettering Large in Small Print

The first printed reviews of Steve Heller and my new book Lettering Large are beginning to appear in magazines and newspapers.

The October 2013 issue of Interior Design
dedicated three pages to the subject
of the book. Unfortunately, they did not dedicate enough time to notice that they missed
to mention one of the authors of the book (me).
But, at least, they managed to mention the book.

The book also has a small feature in the November issue of Italian lifestyle magazine URBAN.

The culture section of the Serbian political daily newspaper, Politika, dedicated a full-page interview, by Snezana Ristic, with me about Lettering Large.

Tongues of Fire

I just designed the logo and poster for famous Macedonian playwright Goran Stefanovski's new play, Ognjeni Jezici (ognjeni = fire, jezici = tongues) or Tongues of Fire.  The poster uses Cyrillic letters because Macedonians use Cyrillic in their writing. Most importantly, the play is also about the Cyrillic alphabet. More about the play in Goran's own words below.

"The play Tongues of Fire dramatizes the question of what is translation and whether it is at all possible?

The example of the brothers St. Cyril and Methodius tells us that it is. In the ninth century they translated the bible in the Slavic language and they invented the Cyrillic alphabet, which helped Christianize the Slavic world. For this they are known today as Apostles of the Slavs.

However they met fierce opposition by the Latin clergy, who put an end to their mission and ruined their lives. The brothers became martyrs of translation. This was the beginning of a war between the Cyrillic and the Latin worlds, between East and West, a war which is still going on to this day.

The story of the Tongues of Fire in the New Testament promises that translation and universal understanding are possible. This is in stark opposition to the story of the Tower of Babel in the Old Testament, which tells us that translation is impossible and that man is doomed to live in eternal  confusion and communication breakdown.

The theme of the play suggests that the devil makes a home in every bad translation and that it merrily resides there."

Goran Stefanovski, 2013

The play, directed by Slobodan Unkovski, opens on November 2, 2013 at the Drama Theater
of Skopje, Macedonia.

The purple text covering the entire poster is the complete script of the play in 7.4pt Macedonian Times. Detail of poster below.
